Gert Sibande: Wetlands, Birdlife and History
Accommodation in Gert Sibande
Grasslands, wetlands, lakes, rolling hills and diverse birdlife define Gert Sibande. Gert Sibande District Municipality lies in the southernmost part of Mpumalanga, borders the Kingdom of Eswatini and shares provincial boundaries with KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and the Free State. The district’s towns offer different highlights: Wakkerstroom is known for birdwatching and Ossewakop, Chrissiesmeer for wetlands and a self-drive route, and Bethal and Ermelo for history connected to the liberation struggle.
Experience Birdwatching and the Landscape
In Wakkerstroom, you can observe rare Rudd’s Larks, Botha’s Larks and other endemic birds from four bird hides. The town also offers two different ways to enjoy the outdoors: you can hike up Ossewakop or mountain bike to the summit. This gives birdwatching and physical activity their own distinct focus.
In Chrissiesmeer, a 60-kilometre circular self-drive birdwatching route runs alongside the wetlands. It offers a different experience from watching birds from the hides in Wakkerstroom: here, the route takes you through the landscape along the wetlands. In Kroomdraai, Songimvelo Nature Reserve covers 48,000 hectares and is the largest provincial game reserve in Mpumalanga.
Event dates may also play a role in planning. Chrissiesmeer hosts the Frog Festival every December and the Wild Flower Festival every January. Wakkerstroom holds an annual music festival. If one of these festivals determines your travel dates, check the exact event dates in advance.
History at Specific Places
The Nomoya Masilela Museum, formerly called Bethal Museum, is located in the cultural precinct in the centre of Bethal. It is housed in the former magistrate’s court, built in 1910. The museum tells the story of Nomoya Masilela and other heroes and heroines of the liberation struggle, including Gert Sibande and Nokuthula Simelane. The building and exhibition thus connect the history of the place with the biographies of significant figures.
In Ermelo, the Cenotaph Msukaligwa in the town centre honours liberation heroes from Gert Sibande District Municipality who fought for racial equality in the liberation struggle. The Intombe battlefields near Mkhondo are associated with a battle in which the Zulu defeated British troops. Emanzana, Embhuleni, is also home to Ebutsini Cultural Village.
Choose the Right Place for Your Trip
When looking for a holiday rental, you can first consider what you want your trip to focus on: birdwatching and Ossewakop in Wakkerstroom, the wetlands route and festivals in Chrissiesmeer, or the historic sites in Bethal and Ermelo. This can help you choose a destination that suits your interests, without combining the different places into a single itinerary.
