Vivo can be explored through two distinct travel interests: nature close to the town and cultural and historical traces in the wider area. Nearby Blouberg Nature Reserve offers a clear connection to nature, while the historical sites and finds in the wider area offer a different perspective. Nature and history therefore have different geographical contexts and provide two distinct focal points for planning your trip.

Natural surroundings at Blouberg

Blouberg Nature Reserve is located near Vivo. It covers 9,360 hectares, extending from the eastern part of the Blouberg mountain range to the savanna near the Brak River. The protected area encompasses diverse habitats, home to numerous plant and animal species. This range is a defining feature for nature enthusiasts: the mountain range and savanna provide the geographical reference points, while the diversity of habitats opens up a broad perspective on nature. Blouberg Nature Reserve is therefore a specific point of interest for the nature side of a stay in Vivo.

One of the world’s largest breeding colonies of Cape vultures is located in the reserve. This special feature adds a specific focus on birds to the diversity of numerous plant and animal species. The term breeding colony draws attention to the species’ reproduction, not just to biodiversity in general. For children interested in birds, the connection between the species, its breeding behaviour and its habitat offers a specific topic for conversation.

There are two nature reserves in the wider area: Maleboho Nature Reserve and Blouberg Nature Reserve. Blouberg Nature Reserve is near Vivo. Maleboho adds a second nature reserve in the wider area to this picture. Those whose main interest is nature can distinguish between Blouberg’s proximity and the wider regional context.

History and traces of the region

The wider area also offers points of interest in cultural history. At Makgabeng Mountain, there are around 400 rock art sites and Iron Age archaeological sites. This brings visual records and Iron Age sites together as distinct ways of exploring the past. The German mission station in Senwabarwana and Liepzig are also among the historical sites in the wider area. Those interested in rock art, archaeology or mission history will find several specific topics that go beyond the region’s natural attractions. Family-friendly activities, along with art and cultural offerings, were announced for the Vivo Boerebemarkingsdag in Vivo on 4 and 5 September 2026.

If you are interested in regional history, also take into account the sites and archaeological locations in the wider area. This lets you first decide on the focus of your trip and choose your holiday apartment in the context of that destination, rather than treating nature and history as the same kind of outing.
