Discover Hilton: Railway Heritage, Nature and Outdoor Activities
Accommodation in Hilton
Retired steam locomotives, a Mistbelt forest area and a range of outdoor activities give Hilton its diverse character. The railway shapes the town’s history, while walks in Doreen Clarke Nature Reserve offer a glimpse of Mistbelt vegetation. As you look for a holiday rental, consider whether nature, history or sporting activities should be the main focus of your stay.
Railway history and historic sites
Retired steam locomotives that visitors can view are located on the grounds of Hilton Train Station. These include the H2, 19B, 15AR and 19AR types. The locomotives on display may change. The station was originally known as Hilton Road Station and is on the main railway line between Durban and Johannesburg. The main railway line between Durban and Johannesburg opened in 1880.
World's View and the old Wagon Trail also form part of Hilton’s historic landscape. In 2014, World's View and the old Wagon Trail were considered historic sites and starting points for exploring Hilton, known for its misty conditions. Those interested in local history will find a different focus here than on walks or sporting activities.
Mistbelt forest and walks
Doreen Clarke Nature Reserve is in the Mistbelt area of Hilton/Winterskloof, north of Pietermaritzburg. It consists mainly of Mistbelt forest, with some grassland along the forest edge. The reserve is suitable for easy walks. A visit therefore combines time in nature with a manageable amount of walking, without requiring a focus on sport.
There were picnic spots in Doreen Clarke Nature Reserve in 2014. If you plan to use them during your stay, check before visiting whether they are still available. The forest and grassland areas give the place a different character from the railway-related sights or the outdoor sports options.
Outdoor activities
LivPadel Hilton is on the grounds of Grace College and has two padel courts. The courts offer views towards the Karkloof and Drakensberg mountain ranges. LivPadel offers equipment hire and coaching by appointment. Before making specific plans, check current availability and arrange coaching in advance.
Another outdoor activity is available at La Rose Driving Range, right on Hilton College Road, where visitors can hit golf balls. If you plan to include the driving range in your itinerary, check beforehand whether it is currently open for use. Padel and hitting golf balls are different sporting options; which one suits your stay depends on the activity you want to plan.
In 2014, World's View Road offered experienced cyclists a technical challenge: it ran through commercial forestry plantations, whose extensive network of roads provided demanding routes. Before planning a ride, check the current condition of the routes.
Tailor your stay in Hilton
If experiencing nature is your main priority, walks in Doreen Clarke Nature Reserve may be the deciding factor. Railway enthusiasts can explore the town’s history at the station and see the steam locomotives; for a sports-focused stay, consider padel, the driving range or cycling. If you are travelling with others who have different preferences, it is worth weighing up everyone’s interests before choosing a holiday rental, rather than treating all the activities as a single excursion itinerary.
