Vereeniging brings together peace history and places that raise different questions: Where did negotiations take place, how are women and children remembered, and which monuments bear their own historical dedications? There are also the Civic Centre, the former site of Top Location, and a route to the Vaal Marina holiday village. If you are looking for a holiday rental, a clear focus can help: the city's negotiation history, the memorial at the old cemetery, or the Vaal Marina Route as a separate part of your trip.

Negotiations and memorial sites

On 15 May 1902, 60 delegates from the Boer republics and 60 delegates from Britain met at Vereeniging Brick and Tile, now Verref. The peace negotiations took place beneath a tree stump that is considered a heritage site. The date, number of delegates, and venue provide different points of reference for the event: when it happened, the parties involved, and the location.

A monument at the peace negotiation site at Verref cricket pitch was officially unveiled on 31 May 1992 by former president F. W. de Klerk. The date is part of the monument's history and, alongside the earlier negotiation meeting, serves as a separate point of reference in time.

The old cemetery and remembrance

The Vereeniging Concentration Camp Cemetery is also Vereeniging's old cemetery. Women and children who had been held in concentration camps during the Anglo-Boer War of 1899 to 1902 were buried there. A cenotaph in the cemetery bears the names and ages of the women and children from the Vereeniging Concentration Camp. The same site thus brings both the burials and a memorial bearing names and ages into focus.

Civic and regional connections

Constitution Square is part of Vereeniging's Civic Centre. A municipal planning document from 2013/14 listed the main office of the Sedibeng District Municipality, the City and Banquet Halls, a Civic Theatre, and a library there. The square offers another civic perspective, alongside the memorial sites connected with the city's peace history.

The Peace Monument was unveiled in Vereeniging in 1961 in honour of the bravery of the Boers during the war. Coert Steynberg designed and created the monument. Its dedication adds a distinct emphasis to the city's historical themes.

The Vaal Teknorama Museum is located on the site of the former Top Location. This connection to the former site offers another historical reference in Vereeniging. Nearby, the Witkop Blockhouse is in the Meyerton area; it is one of about 50 blockhouses still standing in the country. In the wider region, the Sharpeville Memorial and the Nangalembe Memorial commemorate victims of political violence. The Nangalembe Memorial is also dedicated to the victims of the Sebokeng Night Vigil.

The Vaal Marina Route offers a different geographical focus: it leads from Vereeniging to the Vaal Marina holiday village. This means you can choose not only from the city's historical connections, but also from a specifically named route destination and the regional location of individual memorial sites.

Choose the focus for your trip

Then search specifically for a holiday rental in Vereeniging. If you also want to include the Witkop Blockhouse or the regional memorials, bear in mind that they are located in the Meyerton area or the wider region, respectively. The Vaal Marina Route leads to another named destination. This lets you choose where to stay based on the historical or regional focus that interests you most.
