O.R. Tambo brings together a wide range of reasons to travel: waterfalls and protected areas, places from Nelson Mandela’s life, and options for excursions on foot or by kayak. If you’re looking for a holiday apartment or holiday house, you can start by considering which places and experiences you want to focus on during your trip.

Waterfalls, protected areas and wildlife watching

In Mkhambathi Nature Reserve, the Mkhambathi River forms Horseshoe Falls, Strandloper Falls and Mkhambathi Falls before reaching the Indian Ocean. This means several named waterfalls are part of the same river course through the reserve. The reserve is also part of the Pondoland Centre of Endemism and is designated an International Bird Area. Wildlife-viewing opportunities also make it interesting for visitors who want to spend time outdoors and observe birds or other wildlife.

Luchaba Nature Reserve, at Mthatha Dam, offers a different landscape. This 460-hectare protected area consists of wetlands and grassland and is home to wildlife. On the coast, Silaka Nature Reserve stretches from Second Beach to Sugarloaf Rock. At the main beach, the Gxwaleni River forms an estuary. These specific landscape features set the natural destinations apart: at Mkhambathi, the focus is on the river course and waterfalls; at Luchaba, on wetlands and grassland; and at Silaka, on the estuary at the beach.

Nelson Mandela’s story at two museum sites

The Nelson Mandela Museum is located at two sites: in the Bhunga Building in Mthatha and at the Nelson Mandela Youth and Heritage Centre in Qunu. In the Bhunga Building, the museum documents Nelson Mandela’s life and his struggle, as well as the struggle against apartheid; guided tours are offered there. The Gifts of the Nation exhibition displays gifts donated to Mandela by South Africans and the international community.

The site in Qunu was established to support education and leadership programmes. These focus on preserving democratic values, as well as on arts and crafts. The Africa Native Mission Church, where Rholihlahla was baptised, is also located in Qunu. The Freedom Exhibition offers another perspective on history: this visual exhibition was created from interviews in Mthatha and Qunu. If you want to include culture and history in your trip, you can consider these places as different stops.

Active excursions and local activities

For outdoor activity, there is a guided hiking trail at Waterfall Bluff and a quad-bike track near Magwa in Ingquza Hill Local Municipality. Mbotyi Quadbike Tours is a tourism activity in Mbotyi. A licensed kayak operator is also active at Second Beach in Port St Johns, with support from the district. Mbotyi is one of the beaches in Ingquza Hill Local Municipality with designated lifeguards. The activities offer different experiences: guided hiking, a quad-bike track or kayaking at a named beach.

Isinuka Springs in Port St Johns is also a special place: the natural sulphur springs are regarded as a traditional healing site. For a meal with a different focus, there is the Magwa Tea Restaurant in Ingquza Hill Local Municipality, which offers fine dining. Together, these examples show that excursions are not limited to nature and physical activity.

Getting there and choosing the right base

The road connections described here can help you find your way to the protected areas: from Flagstaff, the R61 leads for 70 km to Mkhambathi Nature Reserve on Holy Cross Hospital Road. A gravel road branches off the R61 and runs for 47 km to the entrance of Hluleka Nature Reserve. These details refer to different reserves and starting points, so be sure to use the relevant route when planning your excursions.

When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday house, it makes sense to first choose the places that matter to you for your trip. The museum sites in Mthatha and Qunu, the protected areas, and activities near Mbotyi, Magwa and Port St Johns offer different points of focus. Base your search on the destinations that interest you rather than assuming you’ll find accommodation near a particular excursion.

You can also include Coffee Bay and Nyandeni among the other places in this area to explore.
