Diembéreng: Forest, Wildlife and Bombolong
Accommodation in Diembéreng
Forest conservation, ecological trails and Bombolong tradition shape different facets of Diembéreng. The Ecoparc de Casamance is located in the forest of Diembéring. It is Senegal’s first privately managed forest reserve and was established in the southwest of the country in 2010.
Nature between Forest, Bolongs and Ocean
In 2015, a 32-hectare visitor circuit with ecological trails was created and inaugurated in the Ecoparc; it was intended to showcase the flora and fauna of Casamance. In addition, visitors to Diembéring can discover wildlife across several hundred hectares between the bolongs, ocean and forest; ecological discovery tours are also available. The difference lies in scale: the circuit covers 32 hectares, while the wildlife-watching landscape spans several hundred hectares.
The Bombolong: Sounds and Messages
Another cultural facet is the Bombolong. A 2017 report describes how each of the seven quarters had a Bombolong drum, which at the time continued to announce messages to the villagers. The report distinguishes three types by their sound: Kawek, played by the lead drummer; Seklou, the middle drum; and Kamboumblon, the solo drum. It also describes coded messages understood by the initiated. They often refer to the names of the deceased, their families and the history of their lineages. In this way, the tradition brings together different musical roles with messages and memories of family lines.
Ziguinchor: Architecture and Regional Culture
In the wider destination of Ziguinchor, architecture offers another perspective. In the Bandial Kingdom in the Ziguinchor region, a circular house form with a central impluvium developed; it is described as entirely unique in Africa. In traditional impluvium houses, the rooms were arranged in a ring around a small central courtyard beneath a double-pitched roof. The funnel-shaped inner surface of the roof let in light and collected rainwater. The water was gathered in an earthen basin and channelled outside through a buried palm-trunk drain. The description illustrates how the layout, light and water management work together in this architectural form.
The city of Ziguinchor itself is also characterised by historic buildings: it has numerous structures dating from the French and Portuguese periods. The Cathédrale Saint-Antoine de Padoue in Ziguinchor is listed among the region’s historic monuments. Other experiences in Ziguinchor include watching fishermen arrive and sampling local fruit juices on the river pontoons. Parc national de la Basse Casamance is associated with Oussouye. The King of Oussouye welcomes visitors in the Bois sacré; he always wears red and holds a straw broom as a symbol of his power.
When looking for a holiday rental, you can use your preferred focus as a starting point: nature and Bombolong tradition in Diembéring, or architecture and urban heritage in the wider destination of Ziguinchor.
