Dagana brings together history and culture, with a distinctive connection to the river: Dagana shares the Senegal River with neighbouring Mauritania. When planning your trip, the mix of historic sites and cultural events is also important. The Folie du Baron Roger and Fort de Dagana represent different building histories and uses. Nder offers insight into the political history of Walo, while Place Ndaté Yalla and the Dialawaly Festival provide a glimpse into celebrations and cultural life. If you are looking for a holiday rental in Dagana, you can weigh up these different interests.

Buildings with changing uses

The Résidence de Richard-Toll, also known as the Folie du Baron Roger, was built between 1822 and 1827 by Jacques-François Roger. It served as a retreat for the governors of the Senegal colony. It was later converted first into a monastery and then into a school. This sequence makes the building interesting if you are curious not only about when it was built, but also about its changing functions. The Folie is listed among the historic monuments of the Département of Dagana.

During a site visit on 18 February 2025, the Folie was found to be in an advanced state of disrepair. Check its current condition and accessibility before visiting. This will allow you to take the historical information into account when planning, without assuming a particular itinerary.

Fort de Dagana has a different historical focus: it was built in the 19th century to protect trading posts. According to a report from 2017, the municipal administration converted the fort into a hotel in 2015. While the Folie’s history is shaped by its use as a retreat, monastery and school, the fort’s original purpose was to protect trading posts.

Nder and the history of Walo

Nder is a historic village in the Département of Dagana. In 1820, it was the capital of Walo, when the women of the village resolutely resisted a slave raid. This gives the village’s history a clear political focus, distinct from the building and usage histories of the Folie and the fort. Talatay Nder is commemorated every year.

Celebrations and culture

Place Ndaté Yalla is named after Ndaté Yalla Mbodj, the last Linguère of Walo. Official Independence Day celebrations are held there every year, including parades, military ceremonies and cultural events. The name is thus linked to a recurring programme of public celebrations.

The Dialawaly Festival in Dagana celebrates cultural and musical diversity. At its seventh edition in August 2026, social cohesion and the promotion of cultural heritage were the main themes; the programme also included a cultural caravan. The 2025 edition featured four days of concerts, theatre performances and traditional wrestling. If you want to plan your trip around a particular celebration or the festival, check the dates and programme in advance.

Plan your stay around your interests

Your preferred focus can help determine when to visit when choosing a holiday rental. Historic buildings and the history of Walo offer a different experience from a stay centred on a celebration or festival. First consider which themes matter to you; if you have a specific event in mind, check the dates before deciding when to travel.
