Les Avirons: Forest and History
Accommodation in Les Avirons
Les Avirons offers cultural and historical points of interest as well as scenic attractions. The Cheminée Monjol-Mondon is part of the area’s heritage; within the commune, Tévelave offers a distinctive perspective on its high-altitude setting, primary forest and hiking trails. This raises a practical question when planning your holiday: would you prefer nature to shape your stay, or are you mainly interested in learning about the commune’s history?
Culture and History
The Cheminée Monjol-Mondon, together with its grounds, is fully listed as a historic monument. It was listed on 11 July 2002. The grounds are therefore also part of the protected area. For visitors interested in culture, the Cheminée is a tangible point of reference for discovering Les Avirons through its architectural heritage.
A biographical perspective leads to Tévelave: botanist Thérésien Cadet (1937–1987) was born there. He made a significant contribution to knowledge of the island’s flora and to understanding the organisation of its natural vegetation. For travellers who want to explore nature and history together, his name links a biographical story with the island’s plant life.
Tévelave: Altitude, Forest and Trails
Within the commune of Les Avirons, Tévelave lies at an altitude of 950 metres on the edge of primary forests. The village is the gateway to a large forest that covers the upper part of the Planèze up to the escarpment above the Mafate and Cilaos cirques. Its high altitude and extensive forest give the natural side of the commune a clear focus.
The Route forestière des Tamarins, which runs through the forest and onward to Maïdo, can be reached from the village of Tévelave and connects it to the road to Maïdo. A number of hiking trails lead from the forest road into a bright natural landscape. Check current road conditions before planning a drive. The Sentier des Ouvriers also passes through endemic flora and fauna in the commune, including Calumet des hauts.
A Papangue may be spotted on walks in the Tévelave forest. This species is endemic and is the only bird of prey that breeds on Réunion. The Observatoire des Papangues in the commune also offers the opportunity to observe Réunion buzzards.
The picnic area in the village of Tévelave complements the nature experience with a snack offering featuring Creole cuisine and a boules court. Check in advance whether the snack service is currently operating.
Historical Traces in Tévelave
The local tourism board dates Tévelave’s first settlement by Marrons to the 18th century. One local historical interpretation also identifies Ravine Bras de Jeanne as a supply point for Marrons who fled enslavement in the 18th century. These two connections add another perspective to the commune’s history alongside its architectural monument.
Choose a Holiday Rental Based on Your Travel Plans
When looking for a holiday rental in Les Avirons, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on during your stay: are hiking trails, forest and Tévelave’s high-altitude setting your priority, or are you more interested in the historical connection of the Cheminée Monjol-Mondon? Check the location of each specific listing against the places you plan to visit. This way, your choice is guided by your plans, not just the place name.
