Lagos: History, Culture and Coastal Landscapes
Accommodation in Lagos
Lagos brings together the history of Freedom Park and a range of cultural and landscape themes across the wider travel area. This lets you choose different focuses for your trip: the park’s history of remembrance, historic sites in Badagry, traditions in Oriade or the region’s coastal landscapes.
Freedom Park and the History of Nigeria
Freedom Park Lagos is located on Lagos Island. The park was rebuilt from the ruins of Her Majesty’s Broad Street Prisons to preserve Nigeria’s history and cultural heritage. Its creation puts the transformation of a former prison site into a place of remembrance at the centre of its story. In October 2010, Freedom Park Lagos commemorated the 50th anniversary of Nigeria’s independence. This date marks a specific historical occasion, not a recurring annual festival.
The wider Lagos travel area also offers cultural themes with different historical connections. The Eyo Festival may be held on the occasion of the installation of a new head of an Iga palace or a new Oba. In Badagry, the First Storey Building in Nigeria, in the Boekoh quarters, is associated with the history of missionary work: Rev. C.A. Gollmer built it in June 1845 as the CMS vicarage. In 1846, Bishop Ajayi Crowder translated the English Bible into Yoruba there.
Cultural Sites Across the Wider Travel Area
Several places in Badagry offer different perspectives on the region’s history. The Mobee Family Museum in the Boekoh quarters contains relics from the 16th- to 19th-century slave trade. Today’s Badagry Heritage Museum was formerly the District Officer’s Office and was converted into a museum in 2002. The Barracoon in Badagry is now a small museum with artefacts relating to the transatlantic slave trade. The Badagry local government describes the Vlekete Slave Market as Nigeria’s largest and most populous slave market.
In Oriade, tradition and agriculture are other themes: mat weaving is an indigenous craft passed down through generations. Twelve Farm is an agricultural cultural site that presents indigenous farming traditions. Together with the historic sites in Badagry, these offer a different thematic focus from the history of the park in Lagos itself.
Coastal Landscapes Across the Wider Lagos Travel Area
The descriptions of the coast also vary. Refiner Beach is a stretch of coast with calm waters and natural beauty. Okun Ilashe Beach is a deep-water beach associated with diverse marine life and a local fishing culture. Ilashe Beach is a secluded, golden-sand beach accessible by boat. Koko Beach, in turn, is an expansive coastline with a fresh sea breeze and fishing canoes. Lagos Island offers views across the Lagos Lagoon.
These themes can help you decide what kind of trip you want when choosing a holiday rental. Consider whether you would like to focus mainly on the history of Freedom Park in Lagos itself, or on cultural and coastal sites across the wider travel area. Tailor your holiday rental search to the places and experiences that interest you most.
