Le Bouchon is a coastal village with a public beach right in the village. It also has a specific connection to hiking on the southeast coast: the three-kilometre Coastal Walking Track connects the beach with the Pas Géométriques of Virginia in the Pont Naturel region. The beach and trail give your stay two connected but distinct focuses—time by the water and a coastal route on foot.

Beaches and Coastal Trails in Le Bouchon

On weekends, locals gather at the public beach for picnics, making it especially lively. If you would also like to experience Le Bouchon through the rhythm of the village, you can take this recurring weekend atmosphere into account when planning your trip. The beach is therefore not just the end point of a route; at weekends, it is also a place where locals come together.

The Coastal Walking Track was inaugurated on 3 June 2026. The three-kilometre route runs along the southeast coast and connects the public beach at Le Bouchon with the Pas Géométriques of Virginia in the Pont Naturel region. Its named end points make the route easy to place: Le Bouchon is at one end of the connection and Virginia at the other. If you want to prioritise coastal walking when choosing a destination, this connection offers a specific point of reference; the beach itself is one end point of the trail.

Le Bouchon is also a starting and ending point for the South Coast Trail. No single location is clearly designated as the point of access for this trail. The two trail descriptions offer different kinds of orientation: the Coastal Walking Track has a stated length and end points, while the South Coast Trail has a starting and ending point at Le Bouchon.

Historical discoveries in the wider Grand Port destination

The wider Grand Port destination offers a distinct cultural and historical focus. In Mahébourg, the National History Museum is set in a park of around 12 acres on the banks of the River La Chaux. It displays numerous objects related to corsairs and the naval Battle of Grand Port. Most of the exhibits come from the wrecks of La Magicienne and HMS Sirius, two British frigates that sank in Mahébourg Bay in 1810. The collection thus connects maritime history with specific ship names and a precise date.

The historic site of Vieux Grand Port is also part of the wider view of Grand Port. It includes the ruins of the first Catholic church, built by Mahé de Labourdonnais in 1737, as well as a powder magazine from the French period of 1722 to 1810. The Frederik Hendrik Museum serves as an interpretation centre for Vieux Grand Port. The District Council of Grand Port lists the museum in Old Grand Port among the district’s attractions. In the wider Grand Port area, museum objects and maritime history sit alongside the built remains of the historic site.

Choose the right focus

If you are considering Le Bouchon as a holiday destination, the mix you want of a beach in the village and coastal walking is a specific starting point for your decision. Both interests come together on the Coastal Walking Track, which ends at the public beach. When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on during your stay: should Le Bouchon’s coastal setting take centre stage, or would you rather focus mainly on the historical themes of the wider Grand Port area? This can help you choose a destination that suits your travel plans.
