Naro Moru: Mount Kenya Route and Horse Rental
Accommodation in Naro Moru
Around Naro Moru, visitors can explore a range of different attractions: the Naro Moru Route up Mount Kenya and private stables in town where horses can be rented. The route is one of the most popular on Mount Kenya. If you are looking for a holiday rental, you can first consider whether the mountain route or horse rental will play a greater part in your travel plans. Another distinct cultural highlight is the wider destination of Nyeri District.
Mount Kenya: Getting There and the First Stage
A well-signposted, mostly paved road runs 17 km from Naro Moru to the park entrance at an altitude of 2,400 m. Road conditions may change; check the latest conditions before setting out. This lets you factor the drive into your plans without mistaking it for a stage of the ascent.
Visitors who are not accustomed to high altitudes are advised to walk from Park Gate to Met Station on the first day, rather than drive this stage of the ascent. This recommendation applies specifically to this part of the route and to this group of visitors. When planning, also follow the park's current guidelines. This leaves two different options for the first day: the recommended walk or driving this stage of the ascent.
Horse Rental in Naro Moru
There are private stables in Naro Moru where horses can be rented. This is a different excursion idea from climbing Mount Kenya and broadens the options for planning your trip. Before travelling, check whether horse rental is still available.
Culture in the Wider Destination of Nyeri District
Nyeri District has its own focus on memorial sites and Scout history. Robert Baden-Powell is buried at St. Peters Cemetery in Nyeri County; the ashes of his wife, Olave Baden-Powell, are also interred there. The historic garden and cemetery cover about two acres, with almost half of the area taken up by the cemetery. Stones bearing the values and promises of the Scouts and Girl Guides line the path to the grave. The garden, cemetery and inscriptions each give the site a different focus: the size of the grounds, the grave and the organisations' values.
Paxtu is also part of this regional history. The cottage near Outspan Hotel was built for Robert Baden-Powell in 1937–38. Room 45 at Outspan Hotel is part of Paxtu and was Baden-Powell's bedroom. An account of fieldwork in 2018 noted that the cottage's living room and other rooms had been converted into a museum. Materials about Baden-Powell, as well as donations from Scouts and Guides, were displayed there. The same account mentions annual visits by Scouts and Guides from around the world, particularly on 22 February, Founder's Day; this refers to the visiting pattern at that time.
Another memorial site in Nyeri District is the Memorial Church. It was built in 1952 to commemorate Italians who died as prisoners of war. The wider destination therefore brings together several themes: the grave and Scout inscriptions at St. Peters Cemetery, Paxtu's history dedicated to Baden-Powell, and the commemoration of Italian prisoners of war. These cultural sites form a distinct regional focus alongside activities around Naro Moru.
When choosing a holiday rental, you can therefore first decide on the focus you want for your trip: the Mount Kenya route, horse rental in Naro Moru, or the memorial sites in the wider Nyeri District. Your interests can guide your search, without suggesting that these different excursions offer the same travel experience.
