Abura Asebu Kwamankese brings history to life in specific places: in Moree, the remains of Fort Nassau are visible, while Asebu is associated with KaeKro and the Pan-African Village. These local connections range from fort ruins and cultural events to a cultural project focused on African heritage and development. The wider travel destination of the Central Region adds coastal landscapes, rainforest and other fort sites.

Moree and Asebu: Fort Traces and Culture

Fort Nassau lies in ruins; its remains are still visible in Moree. This makes the history of forts tangible in a specific place. Those interested in the historical influences that shaped a place will find a concrete connection here, rather than encountering only a name on a map.

A 2022 district budget lists KaeKro in Asebu for 25 November and the Abangye Festival in Moree for the first week of September. The periods mentioned fall at different times of the year and refer to different places. If attending a festival is part of your travel plans, confirm the dates in advance for your travel year.

According to a 2024 report, the Pan-African Village in Asebu aims to support people from the African diaspora in rediscovering their cultural heritage, settling there and contributing to the development of Africa and Ghana. Alongside the history of forts and festival dates, the connection between cultural heritage and the future is also a key focus.

The Central Region: Coast, Forts and Rainforest

As a wider travel destination, the Central Region offers further landscape and historical themes. Fort Good Hope stands on a promontory in Senya Beraku near a bay, overlooking a quiet beach lined with coconut palms. The Dutch built the fort in 1715 to take part in the trade in gold, ivory and enslaved people in the inland kingdom of Akyem. The site thus combines a striking coastal setting with a history that also names the trade interests of the time.

The forts in the Central Region that are part of the UNESCO World Heritage property “Forts and Castles, Volta, Greater Accra, Central and Western Regions” include Fort Patience in Apam and Fort William in Anomabu. Together with Fort Nassau in Moree, they represent several named sites in the history of forts; the UNESCO designation applies to the two forts in Apam and Anomabu.

The landscape of the Central Region also varies: coastal plains lie in the south, while the north is characterised by gently undulating, wooded hills. The Kakum Conservation Area is a distinct nature attraction. It consists of Kakum National Park and the Assin Attandanso Resource Reserve, was designated in 1991 and covers about 350 square kilometres in the moist evergreen forest zone. The area is predominantly rainforest.

In Kakum National Park, various trails and guided hikes lead through the rainforest. The canopy walkway consists of seven suspension bridges, is 333 metres long and runs up to 27 metres above the forest floor. These figures give a concrete sense of scale: the trails lead through the forest, while the walkway shifts the view upwards.

Putting Festivals and Travel Interests in Context

The festivals of the Central Region also mark distinct times of the year. The Odambea Festival is celebrated in Saltpond on the last Saturday in August and reflects the region’s historical migration patterns. Edina Buronya takes place in Elmina on the first Thursday of the new year and is a local, Christmas-like festival. Different places, dates and cultural connections thus sit side by side.

When searching for a holiday rental, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: should the fort traces in Moree and the cultural themes in Asebu take centre stage, or are you particularly interested in forests, guided hikes and the other historical sites of the Central Region? This distinction makes your search more targeted without conflating regional examples with local themes.
