Mindelo between harbor, culture, and coast
Accommodation in Mindelo
Mindelo combines a storied harbor history with distinctive cultural landmarks and a coastal bathing area. The city can be explored from different perspectives: through its historic buildings, arts and crafts, and music, as well as the Mercado Municipal and Praia da Laginha. The side that interests you most can also help you decide how to think of Mindelo as a holiday destination when looking for a holiday apartment.
A harbor city with a rich and changing history
From the mid-19th century onward, Mindelo developed significantly. English coal companies settled there, drawn by Porto Grande Bay and the archipelago’s strategic location for supplying ships in the South Atlantic. The busy harbor brought together diverse population groups and shaped a varied culture. Internationally renowned artists such as Cesária Évora also emerged in this setting.
The Torre de Belém in Mindelo is a testament to the city’s architectural history. The Portuguese built it in 1920 as a replica of Lisbon’s Torre de Belém. The Museu do Mar opened inside the replica on April 16, 2014. The combination of the building and the museum makes the Torre a distinctive landmark for anyone interested in Mindelo’s maritime history.
Fortim d'El-Rei, also called Fortim do Mindelo, is another part of the city’s history. It was built in 1852 to defend Porto Grande and the city. The former Liceu de São Vicente, meanwhile, was the archipelago’s most important school of its kind during the colonial period and, for several decades, one of the most significant educational and cultural institutions in Portuguese Africa. These buildings point to different chapters of the past, whose stories are not limited to a single theme.
Art, culture, and the Morada
Mindelo’s culture is also reflected in its museums and art institutions. The Núcleo Museológico Cesária Évora opened in Mindelo on December 17, 2015. The Centro Nacional de Arte, Artesanato e Design (CNAD) is located at Praça Nova, where its two buildings bring together tradition and the present. The older of the two houses a collection documenting 40 years of national arts and crafts production. Anyone interested in design will find another way here to explore the connection between craft traditions and contemporary art.
Mindelo’s historic center is also known as the Morada. Its distinctive architecture is strongly shaped by colonial influences, visible in its buildings, gardens, corridors, squares, streets, and sidewalks. Rather than focusing only on individual buildings, you can pay attention to the different forms that shape the cityscape. Together with the museums and the CNAD, they create a cultural hub where Mindelo’s past and present are visible side by side.
The market and coast: other sides of Mindelo
The Mercado Municipal was restored in 1985 according to plans by architect Leo Papini of ABAKO Parceiros Internacionais AB. The market offers a colorful selection of vegetables and fruit, with the scents of varied herbs in the air. This creates a sensory contrast with the historic buildings and cultural institutions. Since what a market offers can change, you should adjust your expectations to the conditions on site at the time of your visit.
Praia da Laginha, also known as Lajinha, Matiota, or Che Guevara, offers a different focus. It is Mindelo’s bathing area. Those primarily interested in the coast and bathing area will find a different starting point for their trip than those more interested in architecture, art, or urban history. These different themes can help you decide whether Mindelo is the right destination for you, without being mutually exclusive.
Mindelo and the broader destination of Sao Vicente
Within the broader destination of Sao Vicente, Monte Verde is an important natural viewpoint for mountain tourism. From there, the view extends across the entire island of São Vicente, Baía do Porto Grande, and the city of Mindelo. Santo Antão, Santa Luzia, and the Ilhéus Branco and Raso are also visible; on especially clear days, São Nicolau can be seen too. Monte Verde offers a view of the broader destination of Sao Vicente; Mindelo is part of the panorama, not its sole focus.
When looking for a holiday apartment, it can be useful to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: would you like Mindelo’s culture and urban history to be at the center, are you especially interested in the bathing area, or would you also like to take in the views across the broader destination of Sao Vicente?
