Pedra Badejo: Views, Bay and Music
Accommodation in Pedra Badejo
Pedra Badejo offers several points of interest for your trip: the sweeping view from Monte Vigia, the small bay of Praia de Porto Fundo, the former importance of Largo Catchás, and music. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider which of these aspects interests you most. Views and landscapes, the town’s history or a focus on music offer different experiences.
Views and Bay
Monte Vigia is located in Achada Fátima, in the north of Pedra Badejo. A 26-metre-high iron cross stands on the hill, offering sweeping views over the town and its surroundings. Praia de Porto Fundo offers a different perspective on the landscape: the small bay lies beyond Monte Vigia at Ponta de Santa Cruz. Calm waters and natural scenery define its character. In this way, a panorama over Pedra Badejo and the bay’s tranquil waters offer two distinct attractions. If you are deciding whether to focus your holiday more on views or on a bay, these two places provide a concrete point of reference.
Street and Port in the Town’s History
Largo Catchás is an emblematic street in the historic centre of Pedra Badejo. In the past, it was an important economic and social centre of the municipality. Among those working there were Hiace drivers, as well as fish and other market vendors. These examples illustrate the street’s former role: transport and market activity were part of everyday life there. The port also points to a former connection: it served mainly as a shipping link to the island of Maio. This maritime connection adds another facet to the history of markets and transport.
Music and Cultural Connections
A report on the edition of 1 Concelho 3 Ritmos held in Pedra Badejo in March 2026 described it as the 14th edition. The programme included Tcheka, Princezito, Os Tubarões, Ferro Gaita and Meleny Gomes. There was a statue of Katchás in the event area; in the municipality, the festival is also called “3 Ritmos”. The artists’ names and the statue refer to the reported edition, not to a permanent or future programme.
Carlos Alberto Martins Catchás (1951–1988), known as “Rei do Funaná”, came from the wider travel area of Santa Cruz. He was a musician and composer, founded the music group Bulimundo, and created and promoted the Funaná movement. This biographical connection belongs to Santa Cruz and is not specific to Pedra Badejo.
In the Wider Destination of Santa Cruz
In Achada Igreja, the ruins of a church in need of rehabilitation and some graves in its associated cemetery are among the town’s cultural and historical features. They are included in visitor routes through the Concelho de Santa Cruz; the ruins require rehabilitation. In the Concelho de Santa Cruz, 25 July is Municipal Day and the date of the patronal festival in honour of São Tiago Maior, also known as “Nhu Santiago”. These regional traditions and historic sites add further aspects of the wider destination to the picture of Pedra Badejo.
Achada Bel-Bel is also in the Concelho de Santa Cruz and is home to Rabelados communities. A 2013 description highlights the sweeping view from João Toro over the green Ribeira dos Picos, with its striking coconut palms and banana plants. It mentions numerous birds and endemic plants along the stream. Thus, cultural sites and a distinctive landscape perspective in the wider travel area complement the impressions of Pedra Badejo.
